Andrew Marshall is a Pentagon legend. For more than four decades he has served as Director of the Office of Net Assessment, the Pentagon's internal think tank, under 12 defense secretaries and eight administrations. Yet Marshall has been on the cutting edge of strategic thinking even longer than that. At the Rand Corporation during its golden age in the 1950s and early 1960s, Marshall helped formulate bedrock concepts of US nuclear strategy that endure to this day; later, at the Pentagon, he pioneered the development of "net assessment" - a new analytic framework for understanding the long-term military competition between the United States and the Soviet Union. Following the Cold War, Marshall successfully used net assessment to anticipate emerging disruptive shifts in military affairs, including the revolution in precision warfare and the rise of China as a major strategic rival of the United States. In The Last Warrior, Andrew Krepinevich and Barry Watts - both former members of Marshall's staff - trace Marshall's intellectual development from his upbringing in Detroit during the Great Depression to his decades in Washington as an influential behind-the-scenes advisor on American defense strategy. The result is a unique insider's perspective on the changes in US strategy from the dawn of the Cold War to the present day. Covering some of the most pivotal episodes of the last half century and peopled with some of the era's most influential figures, The Last Warrior tells Marshall's story for the first time, in the process providing an unparalleled history of the evolution of the American defense establishment. 1. In the not-too-distant future, the United States loses its status as a world Superpower. With the military cut to a barebones level and American leaders focused solely on the nation's internal struggles, the door will open for new powers to emerge on the world stage. In the wake of this power vacuum, China and Russia begin to flex their military muscles and expand their dominance in the world. They have the most up-to-date technological innovations ready for battle: railguns, unmanned drone tank vehicles, exoskeleton suits, and cyber warfare.  Setting the Stage: The border of India and Pakistan has long been one of the planet's most precarious ticking time bombs waiting to explode, and when a scheme to agitate the tensions in that region is successful, it paves the way for powerful men to begin consolidating authority and start building an Islamic Caliphate. Extremists move from random attacks of violence to plots to take control of positions of political influence. America's usual ally against aggression, Europe, is weakened by economic decline; the U.S is facing this new threat without backup.  In these hazardous times, America will need strong guidance. Henry Stein, a new kind of leader, builds a new political party to lead the charge to bring the country back from the brink. His unconventional style is just what the U.S. needs in order to deal with the changing world balance of power and a worldwide Great Depression. As conflicts near and far began to plague the planet, will President Stein be able to prevent a third world war? 1. Language: English. Narrator: Alex Hyde-White. Jake Needham is Asia’s most stylish and atmospheric writer of crime fiction.” (The Singapore Straits Times)“Needham writes so you can smell the spicy street food mingling with the traffic jams, the sweat, and the garbage.” (Libris Reviews)The first bomb cracked the Hilton like an egg. The second gutted the lobby of the Marriott. And the third peeled the front off of the Grand Hyatt. Three massive explosions, all at American hotels in the heart of the city, and all within a few horrifying seconds. Hundreds are dead and thousands are injured. Singapore is bleeding.Inspector Samuel Tay is a senior inspector in the Special Investigation Section of Singapore CID, but he is frozen out of the investigation from the beginning. He has some serious enemies in Singapore’s Internal Security Department and he has even more enemies at the American embassy, so Tay is assigned routine cases while his colleagues join with the CIA and the FBI in a feverish search for the bombers.Three days after the explosions, the smell of death still sticky in the city’s air, Tay is sent to a run-down apartment near the Malaysian border where two children have found the body of a Caucasian male with a broken neck. Tay feels an immediate connection with the dead man, although he doesn’t think he has seen him before. As Tay searches the dead man’s past for clues to who he was and who his killer might have been, Tay’s own past begins to give up its secrets. A long-dead father he can barely remember reaches out of the grave to point to the truth about both the murdered man and the bombings. And the horror of Singapore’s destruction becomes a personal horror for Samuel Tay. Although a novel of fiction, it is based upon real incidents that occurred during that time period. Actual locales in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Staten Island are utilized. The audiobook contains love, death, passion, violence, and is interspersed throughout with history of the time period. It centers around two main characters who work together in the 120th police precinct. The prominent character is Lieutenant A. and his driver Charlie. During their times together, Lt. A goes back into his past and describes for Charlie some of the most horrific incidents that he had encountered when he was a young officer during the 1960s and 1970s. Charlie begins to have a horrid affair with a woman he meets while on patrol and eventually falls in love with her. He is married and, eventually, his wife finds out. Charlie begins to feel torn between his wife and his girlfriend and confides in Lt. A with his problem. He begins to rely on Lt. A to help him with his problem. The stories that Lt. A recounts for him help take Charlie's mind off his pressing problems with his ongoing affair. The pressure of the affair begins to have a negative effect on Charlie, especially after his wife finds out and, she too, begins an affair in the office where she works. Charlie finally realizes that he does not want to lose his wife and finally confesses everything to Lt. A, who comes up with a solution that just might help Charlie with his problem. Merritt, with just a dash of H. P. Lovecraft. Arthur Leo Zagat graduated from Fordham University Law School in what ended up being a very bad year - 1929. Thanks to the stock market crash and the resulting depression, he, like his contemporary Erle Stanley Garner, never practiced law. Instead, Zagat teamed up with another struggling young attorney, Nate Schachner, collaborating on a raft of science fiction and fantasy yarns for Wonder Stories and similar pulps. Striking off on his own, Zagat soon established himself as a versatile writer. His skills and reputation grew, and by the mid-1930s, he cracked the top pulp magazine, Argosy, producing a string of serialized fantasy novels that were nothing like anything Zagat had ever penned previously. Drink We Deep was the first of these. It ran in six parts, beginning with the July 31, 1937 Argosy. It's the eerie account of brave archeologist and paleontologist Hugh Lambert, and the weirdness he discovered in pastoral upstate New York. We don't want to give away any story secrets, so we'll just quote the blurb adorning Drink We Deep's Fantastic Novels reappearance: Beneath the timeless rocks of the Heiderbergs - slumbering below Lake Wankooka's unfathomed waters - lies the seed of Earth conflict. For there lives the strange and troubled race of other worldlings, waiting, always waiting, for the hour of deliverance.... And on the Earth's surface, one man feels in his blood an irresistible summons that calls him to their side... We know little about the inspiration for this fearful fantasy. Except this: "My daughter's summer camp gave me the setting and the inspiration for Drink We Deep," Zagat once revealed. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Steve Marvel. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Sensory deprivation or perceptual isolation is the deliberate reduction or removal of stimuli from one or more of the senses. Simple devices such as blindfolds or hoods and earmuffs can cut off sight and hearing respectively, while more complex devices can also cut off the sense of smell, touch, taste, thermoception (heat-sense), and 'gravity'. Sensory deprivation has been used in various alternative medicines and in psychological experiments (e.g., see Isolation tank). Short-term sessions of sensory deprivation are described as relaxing and conducive to meditation, if sometimes boring, however, extended or forced sensory deprivation can result in extreme anxiety, hallucinations, bizarre thoughts, depression and death.

For elderly Dr Zachary Busner it is a mysterious object - 'NO CALLER ID - How should this be interpreted? Is it that the caller is devoid of an identity due to some psychological or physical trauma?' - but also it's his life line to his autistic grandson Ben, whose own connection with technology is, in turn, a vital one.For Jonathan De'Ath , aka 'the Butcher', MI6 agent, the phone may reveal his best kept secret of all: that Colonel Gawain Thomas, husband, father, and highly-trained tank commander - is Jonathan 's long time lover. And when technology, love and violence finally converge in the wreckage of postwar Iraq, the Colonel and the Spy's dalliance will determine the destiny of nations.Uniting our most urgent contemporary concerns: from the ubiquitous mobile phone to a family in chaos, from the horror of modern war, to the end of privacy, Phone is Will Self's most important and compelling novel to date.

A detailed look at how, and why, the American financial system has reached its current state Today's economy and capital markets are faced with the long-term buildup of public and private credit. Furthermore, we face higher taxes, greater spending, and more debt. We are now at a critical crossroads and our leaders have few realistic solutions. Proposals calling for tax reforms or fewer regulations have fallen on deaf ears. In fact, U.S. democracy has become more socialist and reform is needed immediately. Endless Money is an examination of how the U.S. government and the country's financial systems have embraced socialism, and why cultural deterioration reinforces the trend and jeopardizes democracy. In it, author William Baker sees this socialism embodied in two things. The first is the socialization of income, the second is the socialization of credit. * Explores the present socialistic qualities of the American government and its financial system * Looks back at how today's conditions relate not just to the Great Depression, but ancient empires such as Rome * Calls for radical changes such as reduced regulatory power of the Federal Reserve, a considerable devaluation of the dollar in terms of gold, and repeal of income tax * Includes a Web site devoted to book, with recommendations, quotes from the financial community, and think tank contacts Insightful and informative, Endless Money examines our current economic condition and describes what the United States can do to get back on the right economic track.

The Dancing Man

Southern California is many things to many people. A continuous influx of new people, new ideas, new interests, and different life styles creates a mind-boggling diversity. This story covers the life of an individual who is part of that diverse mosaic - an East Coast transplant who comes to Southern California by way of the US Marine Corps and San Diego. This book is a chronology of indelible memories that begin with family life in the depression thirties and the early-on impact of Catholicism from elementary school to mid-college. It provides a unique insider's view of life in a near monastic setting when the author, at age 15, commits himself to a religious order. Leaving the order in mid-college, he joins another highly disciplined organization - the United States Marine Corps where, as both an enlisted man and officer, he sheds the earlier mold of the religious life. After military service, years of mainstream jobs follow including city halls, county government, and aerospace - all blended with a heavy dose of politics and teaching. His engagement with entrepreneurial undertakings follows with responses to critical needs such as jobs for displaced aerospace engineers when space programs are cutback, creation of a charter school to meet the need for better public schools, and his expansion of academic programs to engage older Americans in mentally stimulating and life enhancing learning experiences. All these experiences are couched within the context of events that highlighted each decade. This multifaceted career takes its toll on a marriage of thirty years whose continuity has been sustained in large measure through a family- shared hobby of dancing. But even dancing can't hold together the strains put on a marriage by a roller coaster life of continuous change. Divorce and the premature death of 3 of 4 children mar a life absorbed with programs designed to benefit the community. Despite these losses, the author continues to lead, teach, and dance. This book reflects so many facets of southland life that many readers, especially long time residents of Southern California, will identify with one or more aspects - the military, former aerospace workers, city workers, teachers, and the retirement community. It provides a unique overview of Southern California's dance scene especially in the Los Angeles-Orange County-San Bernardino/Riverside, and San Diego areas. Dancing has long been central to the author's family - ballroom, country, folk, and swing. The hobby continues to fuel the author's energy and pleasure. To those in or about to enter the expanding ranks of America's seniors, the author sets an example of an age-impervious effort to enhance a community's learning resources. His current efforts involve formation of a senior think tank whose analyses of current events will be shared with schools and the community.

The Norconian Resort Supreme was a magnificent disaster. A chance discovery of 'hot sulfur water' in 1926 led entrepreneur Rex Clark to construct one of the finest and most comprehensive recreation facilities on the West Coast. Movie stars, Olympic champions, and the richest of the rich flocked to it. Sadly the Norconian debuted just months before the onset of the Great Depression, and very quickly Rex Clark's $4.5-million dream became known as 'Rex's Folly.' The resort eventually became one of the preeminent naval hospitals in the nation, a top-secret think tank, and a medium-security prison. Miraculously most of the original structures still exist. The old hotel, despite its placement on the National Register of Historic Places, has become a political hot potato and now sits languishing in the middle of the California Rehabilitation Center--abandoned yet stunning, with fabulous chandeliers, tile work, and breathtaking paintings still intact.
